Picture Story
THE MOUSE AND THE PENCIL
One day a little mouse was
looking for something to eat.
He found a pencil.

тАЬIтАЩm going to bite you.тАЭ
said the mouse. And he bit it hard.

тАЬYou are hurting me,тАЭ
said the pencil. тАЬLet me
draw you one last picture
and then you can do
what you like!тАЭ
тАЬVery well,тАЭ said the mouse.

The pencil drew a big circle.
тАЬIs that a cheese?тАЭ asked
the mouse.
тАЬWeтАЩll call it a cheese,тАЭ
said the Pencil
and it drew three little circles
inside the big one.

тАЬThatтАЩs an apple,тАЭ squeaked the mouse.
тАЬLetтАЩs call it an apple,тАЭ said the pencil
and it began drawing some funny curved
things near the second circle.

тАЬWhy, those are cucumbers,тАЭ
said the mouse, licking his lips.
тАЬI wish youтАЩd hurry. I simply canтАЩt
wait to get my teeth into them!тАЭ

The pencil drew two little
triangles on the top circle.
тАЬOh, oh!тАЭ squeaked the mouse.
тАЬNow youтАЩve made it like a cat!
DonтАЩt go on!тАЭ

But the pencil went on,
till it had drawn long
whiskers and a mouth on
the top circle.
And the mouse cried
out in terror, тАЬItтАЩs a real
cat! Help!тАЭ

Now see if YOU can draw
a cat that looks real
enough to frighten away
the mice! [V. Suteyev]
